How can you treat unwell people in an institution that is itself unwell?

Beaujon Hospital, Clichy, the Paris suburbs.

Dr. Jamal Abdel-Kader, a liaison psychiatrist, navigates from the emergency room to the intensive care unit, from patients with mental disorders to those who are chronically ill and bedridden.

He is the only psychiatrist in this 400-bed facility. Dedicated to his patients, he does his utmost to alleviate their suffering, to listen to their thoughts and feelings, to help them fight their demons.

However, the public health system is in crisis. There isn’t enough time, and the caregivers are cracking up. Yet Jamal and his colleagues keep striving to fulfill their mission: to heal the souls, bodies and minds of the patients in their care.
