Alyas Karmani is a psychologist by background, with over 30 years of counselling and therapy work focussing on Muslim centred mental health and emotional well-being; as well as extensive experience of working with children who have experienced trauma, exploitation and abuse.

Alyas was Co-Director of STREET UK 2009-2011 (Strategy to reach, educate and empower teenagers) a specialist violence prevention intervention provider working with young people who are at risk of criminality, gang involvement, sexual violence, social exclusion and violent extremism; recognised as an exemplar of best practice in the UK and working in both South London and West Yorkshire.

He has been a consultant for West Yorkshire and London Probation responsible for training specialist offender’s managers in working with TACT offenders; he has personally worked with over 50 convicted TACT offenders.

He has over 30 years of work experience in the Public Sector across a range of policy areas specialising in Equality and Diversity and was former head of Race Equality for the Welsh Assembly Government 2004.

He has an extensive research background and worked at Leeds and Bradford universities in Social Policy research units from 1991-1996.

During his 30+ years of experience, Alyas has been an academic and researcher on ‘Culturally Competent’ mental health service delivery and was CEO of ‘Sharing Voices’, an award-winning trans-cultural community mental health support project based in West Yorkshire. He has been a passionate advocate for mental health services and minority communities for over 30 years. He has been a national policy advisor and has previously presented at the EU in Brussels, Home Affairs Select Committee- Parliament and at CERD (Committee for the Elimination of Race Discrimination) United Nations-Geneva.

Alyas is a national advisor on Suicide Prevention, a copy of his research into suicide prevention in minority communities is available on request.

On the teaching side of things, Alyas has over 30 years of experience in delivering training and education programmes, receiving over 90% attendee satisfaction.

Alyas is also an Imam at a number of Mosques in the North of England and across the UK where he presents the Friday Sermons as well as regular lectures and lessons. Alyas is also actively involved in many grass roots Muslim organisations in the UK and supports strategic development and governance improvement. Alyas has been a vociferous opponent of extremist Islamic movements in the UK and has featured regularly on mainstream media, print media and social media.
